Written by Principal Theresa Slipher: School has just started at St. Michael Catholic School in Greenfield, Indiana but the staff and students have already begun a program that will not only change our school but also our community. On Friday, August 8th we will kick off the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program which will start off our three year anti-bullying campaign. The staff after receiving two days of professional training by Kimberly Ewing our Certified Olweus Bullying Prevention Trainer are very excited to be participating in the program. Our first thoughts about a bullying program were that we are a Catholic School, we already teach compassion, tolerance, empathy and respect for others. We all quickly learned that this was not just another bullying program but a bullying prevention program. Not only does it include all staff from the bus driver to maintenance to even the cafeteria staff but it also includes students and parents. The Olweus program gives everyone the tools to understand what bullying is, but how to prevent bullying, what to do if you are being bullied and how to stand up for others who are being bullied. This is an exciting time for us at St. Michael and we are proud to be a part of a nation-wide, best practice, evidence based program, that will give a more positive place for our students to learn and develop.
